Sports Metric of the Week: Massive Jump in PGA Tour Driving Distance

Bubba Watson, one of golf’s longest hitters, took home the Northern Trust Open trophy this weekend at Riviera Country Club.

Watson’s length off the tee is a huge advantage, allowing him to reach all par-5’s in two shots and hit wedges into the majority of par-4s.

So far on tour this year, Bubba is averaging 309.5 yards in driving distance, a number that would’ve been unheard of just 16 years ago.

The graph below shows the enormous growth in distance off the tee from PGA Tour players.

In 2000, just one player (John Daly) averaged over 300 yards off of the tee. That number has grown to 38 in 2016.
